A Simple Guide to Slaying AutoCAD

Before grasping all that is AutoCAD, it’s important to be in the know about a few things. By learning this information before taking AutoCAD classes, it’s almost a guarantee that the entire course will be a success.

Learn the Interface

AutoCAD interface has been made much simpler to guide new users. Ribbon and other advancements are appreciated by newcomers, though veterans who took AutoCAD classes in the past aren’t too fond of these changes. It pays to figure out how to use and activate drawing tools as well as change tools. For those already comfortable with Windows apps, this will take minimal effort, as AutoCAD is Windows compatible

Open a Drawing and Move Around

Learning navigation tools and becoming comfortable with them is a huge benefit before attending AutoCAD classes. Learn to move around, zoom in and zoom out, pan, and just spend some time playing around with the tools. This will allow one to become comfortable with them so when classes start they can just jump right in and focus on other lessons. Try to create a new drawing!

Getting used to the drawing tools is next. Many professors will tech each tool and how to use it, but often they move too quickly and the truth is, if one doesn’t have ample time working with each tool it’s use will be forgotten in days.

Working the Tools – Some Simple Tips

While the drawing tools are pretty self-explanatory as far as what they do based on how they are named, (for example Line makes a line, Circle makes a circle) they are each used differently. Each tool has a different set of steps! Thankfully one can use command line. This is a simple way to remember all the steps. One example is:

Command: _line Specify first point:

Specify next point or [Undo]:

Once the line tool is activated, AutoCAD asks you to specify the next point or undo. Click within the drawing to specify the point! For the second, click again. Ta dah, you have a line! By following the command line, everything will be made easier.

Next Step: Modification of Tools

One taking AutoCAD classes will learn to modify tools. Similar to the drawing tools the name or icon will specify its function. Allow the pointer to hover above the icon, and help will appear. Another option is to press F1 whilst activating the choice tool. This will cause a help file to open.

Selecting an Object

Another important aspect of AutoCAD classes is learning object selection. Artists must select objects when manipulating them. It’s important to learn what to do if selecting more than one object.

First of all, the artist can define a window selection by clicking at two points, this is the first on the left then the second on the right. Now, all the elements will appear inside of the window. If picking right point then left, there will be a cross window selection. It’s possible to activate window selection by typing “W” then “enter” when AutoCAD asks select objects. Other selections to be learned in AutoCAD classes include:

• Cross Window

• Window Polygon

• Fence

• Crossing Polygon

Armed with these simple guidelines, anyone will find it much easier to get through AutoCAD classes with flying colors.
